SM2CO17 Magnets

Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) magnets, a type of rare-earth magnet, are manufactured by processing metal powders into precision metal components, which include strict controls and convoluted heat treatment cycles. This alloy is approximately 35% Samarium to 60% Cobalt, with the final 5% being made up of Iron and Copper, allowing for longevity and high performance.

There are two different groups of Samarium Cobalt magnets, divided based on their product energy range. The first series of Samarium Cobalt magnets, Sm1Co5, has an energy product range of 15-22 MGOe, and the second series of Samarium Cobalt magnets, Sm2Co17, has a range between 22 and 30 MGOe.

Although slightly weaker than other rare earth magnets such as Neodymium, Samarium cobalt magnets greatest property is their ability to perform at higher temperatures, typically up to 350°C, depending on application and grade.

Due to this they are an ideal choice for the automotive, aerospace and motor industry.

Sm2Co17 contains the base elements of Samarium and Cobalt but with the addition of copper, hafnium, iron and sometimes zirconium and praseodymium. Due to the addition of iron in Sm2Co17 magnets, it is sometimes prone to a small amount of surface corrosion when in water. A coating of nickel, copper and then nickel again will eliminate the risk of corrosion.
